Torimatsu
This izakaya in Kushiro's entertainment district is the birthplace of 'zangi' (Hokkaido-style fried chicken) in 1960. The tiny counter-only bar packs in local regulars who come to enjoy freshly fried zangi, just as they have since the Showa era. The bone-in zangi uses fresh, never-frozen chicken from Shiretoko or Date, cut up and deep-fried in lard — the original method. About 15 minutes walk from Kushiro Station.
"The birthplace of zangi. This fresh-fried flavor can't be found anywhere else." "A real Showa-era izakaya where local old-timers gather. Service is rough but the food is genuine." "Takeout available from 2 portions. Call ahead to skip the wait."
