Kanbukuro
A long-established Sakai wagashi shop founded in the first year of Gentoku (1329) at the end of the Kamakura period, boasting about 700 years of history. The shop name is said to have been given by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The specialty is kurumi mochi, where mochi is 'wrapped' in green soybean paste. As Sakai's soul food, it continues to be loved by locals. Selected for Tabelog Wagashi/Sweets WEST Top 100 2023. Always busy even on weekdays. Takeout available.
Many visitors say 'I always stop here when I come to Sakai,' and the flavor unchanged over 700 years is highly praised. The balance of sweetness and soybean flavor in the kurumi mochi is exquisite. The summer ice kurumi mochi is particularly popular.
