Boulangerie Ken
This bagel-focused bakery opened in Shimo-Akatsuka in October 2005. Known for its famously oversized “dumbbell bagels,” it has been named to Tabelog's Top 100 Bakeries list multiple times (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022). After a serious illness kept owner Ken in and out of hospital for two years, the shop reopened on March 31, 2026, and he is gradually rebuilding the menu as part of his rehabilitation.
The bagels are praised as “chewy and moist” with “a crisp outside and soft, chewy inside.” Post-reopening reviews from April 2026 onward are largely happy the shop is back, though some note “fewer hard-crust breads than before” or that “the creative specialty bagels weren't available” — signs the lineup is still being rebuilt. No mentions of unscheduled closures; operations appear stable.
