Wanko Soba & Dining Kajiya
A historic soba restaurant in Hanamaki with over 120 years of history, founded in 1904 (Meiji 37). Known as the birthplace of the National Wanko Soba All-Japan Championship. Author Miyazawa Kenji was a regular, bringing colleagues and students from his time teaching at the agricultural school. Handmade niban (80% buckwheat) soba and seasonal specials are the highlights. Wanko soba served at lunch only, using the traditional matchstick-counting method. Shirogane pork katsudon and mekabu soba are also popular.
