Toho Chaya
Founded in 1947 (Showa 22), this is the Kumano heritage restaurant that first served narezushi as restaurant cuisine in Shingu. The 'Hon-narezushi,' made by packing salted saury and rice into wooden barrels and fermenting for weeks to decades, is a one-of-a-kind dish you can only eat here. The 30-year-aged narezushi, transformed like cheese, draws food connoisseurs from across Japan. Whale cuisine, ayu and mackerel narezushi showcase the best of Kumano's sea and mountain bounty. Ranked #2 in Shingu City on Tabelog (score 3.56).
Tabelog 3.56, 83+ reviews (ranked #2 in Shingu City). TripAdvisor 4.5, 12 reviews (#8 in Shingu). Customers say 'always come when visiting Shingu,' '30-year narezushi is a shock,' and 'the owner teaches you about Kumano food culture in detail.' No fake review concerns. Over 70 years in business.
