Benten no Sato
A tamago kake gohan (TKG) specialty restaurant hidden in the mountains of Kameoka. Uses specially raised eggs with 2.5x standard folate content and locally grown Kameoka rice for ¥980 with unlimited egg and rice refills. Open only Friday to Sunday, 11am to 2pm, yet lines form every weekend. Visitors come from Osaka and Kobe just for this bowl. Featured in Kyoto Shimbun as 'the mysterious restaurant with weekend queues in the mountains.' A truly one-of-a-kind gem.
Tripadvisor 4.0 / 25 reviews, Yahoo Maps 3.79 / 28, Tabelog 3.43 / 228 reviews. Universally praised: 'Always a queue on weekends,' 'Treasure of Kameoka,' 'Worth the 2-hour trip from Osaka,' 'Criminally good for a TKG-only restaurant.' A true gem that can build a queue with the simplest of menus. Many repeaters.
